External Organisation
Why should you get involved?

Universities recognise the need to better understand the issues that affect organisations in the wider community, and that by working together innovation can be stimulated and ideas developed beneficially for social, economic and cultural development.

Hosting a SIP placement will allow a university staff member to immerse themselves in your organisational environment to share tacit information, exchange knowledge and gain greater strategic insights into each other’s organisations.  By working closely, a SIP placement should benefit your organisation in several ways to:
  • Gain a fresh perspective on issues affecting your organisation
  • Inform universities of your needs and requirements
  • Investigate trends for future research and development projects
  • Examine how future collaboration can really make a difference to you
  • Give you access to cutting edge research and the vast resources of universities
  • Develop projects to access sources of funding only available by working with a university partner
SIP placements are fully funded, so there is no financial input required from host partners.

Who can host a SIP placement?
Funding is provided by HEFCW for SIP placements at organisations from the public, private or voluntary sector, excluding educational institutions.

What activities can we fund?

All placements must be related to a new and additional activity for the external partner.  These could include:
  • A non executive directorship on the board of a private company
  • Acting as a  trustee of a charitable organisation
  • Work shadowing on a strategic project
  • Working within an organisation to explore future product or service development
What activities are not eligible for SIP funding?
  • Free consultancy
  • Free training provision
  • Free research
